Beautiful Cottonwood

On the way to Lewis and Clark Caverns, in Montana, I saw this lone cottonwood tree from a pullout along the road. I become so curious about this tree’s story – why was it out there, by itself? Had anyone else ever noticed this beautiful tree before?
